Unit 1
Most of the students in my high school are healthy. They exercise about three or four times every week. Katrina is one of them. She is active. She goes skateboarding once or twice a month. She has good eating habits. She tries to drink milk every day. She looks after herself pretty well. As a result ,of course, she is pretty healthy. Good food and exercise help her study better and get good grades.
As for Bill, his lifestyle is different from Katrina’s. One day, an interviewer from a TV progam asked him, “How often do you shop?” “ Hardly ever. But I like surfing the Internet.” “Good. How many times do you surf the Internet every week?” “Five or six times.” As for food,he likes a lot of unhealthy food, like coffee, chips, cola, chocolate and so on. His grandpa says to him, “Maybe you should make a difference. You must exercise a lot and eat less junk food to keep healthy.”
Although Bill has no good eating habits,he has good sleeping habits. It’s the same as Katrina’s. They sleep nine hours every day.

A lying boy
Long long ago, a little boy named David. He is an exchange student in China. His host family was Mr Cheng’s. They are very friendly to him. Mr Cheng sent him
to school every day. David likes him. But he doesn’t like study at all. So he made many ways to skip classes.
On Monday morning, he said, “Dear Unlce Cheng, I’m not feeling well at the moment.” “What’s the matter?” uncle Cheng asked. “I have a headache and a sore throat.” Uncle Cheng said, “Oh, honey, maybe you had a cold, you should drink some hot tea with honey.” On Tuesday, he said, “I feel thirsty, I think I had a fever. I am weak.” Uncle Cheng asked him to take some medicine, but he didn’t do that. He ate too much junk food. On Wednesday, he said he had a stomachache. Uncle Cheng said: “You shouldn’t eat anything. It’s important to eat a balanced diet. On Thursday, he still didn’t want to go to school. So he said that he had a toothache. Uncle Cheng took him to see a Traditional Chinese dentist. The doctor asked him, “What’s your problem?” David said, “There’s something wrong with my back, arm, ear, foot, neck…” The doctor said to Uncle Cheng, “There’s nothing wrong with him, Maybe he is just stressed out.”
Uncle Cheng was very angry and said to David, “ Honest is very important. If you want other people to believe you, you shouldn’t lie any more.” David felt very sorry at that moment, next day, he went to school, and they had a Chinese exam, but he didn’t get good grades, because his Chinese was not improving. Everybody laughed at him. Few people made friends with him, even his western friends, they don’t want to play with him any more. After that, he never lie again.

Poor Michael can’t go anywhere for vacation because he has to babysit his sister. “How long do you have to look after your sister?” Hector asked. “Maybe I need five days to finish this job.” Michael answered. Hector said to him, “That’s all right, I’ll send you a lot of postcards.” “Yeah!” They all laughed.

Unit 4
Poor Son of Mr. Miser
There is a small village with rivers and lakes in part of North America. Mr. Miser and his son Tom live there together. Their house is far away from Tom’s school. It’s in a town, about one hundred-eight kilometers.
Mr. Miser asked Tom to go to school by bike or on foot instead of taking the subway or the bus. Tom shouted, “Dad! Do you know how far it is from our home to my school?” “I know, honey”, Mr. Miser smiled, “But riding a bike and walking must be a lot more fun than taking a bus.” Tom said, “But the bus stop and the train station are around our house. They are quicker than a bicycle.” Mr. Miser was angry, “But it needs forty-six cents, you know?” Tom (无奈的)said, “That depends on you, Dad.”
One day, Tom was late for school. His teacher asked, “How do you get to school?” “By bike.” Tom answered. “How long does it take?” “Thirty-three minutes by bike”. “There are other means of transportation. Why not take a bus?” “Because of money, fifty-seven minutes’ walking is free, my dad said.”
Unit 5
A Busy Week
Look at the calendar, it’s October 10th. After the relaxing vacation, everybody in our class is really busy. My best friend Henry is an excellent student. But he is the busiest of all. He has too many things to do. On Monday, he helps his parents babysit his sister, then comes over to his aunt’s house to help her with housework.
On Tuesday, He has to have a guitar lesson from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, and then practices the piano until 11o’clock. On Wednesday, he has to study for the chemistry test. Kay invites him to her 16th birthday party on the fourth day. He’d love to go, but he has to see the doctor with his mother. Lisa asks him to go to the concert on the fifth day. Although he thanks for her asking, he has to discuss the science report with his classmates, because he must finish the project before the day after tomorrow. Maybe another time he can go. On Saturday, he has a tennis training and plays it the whole morning.
He knows he won’t be free, but he keeps happy. He is going to relax himself in the mountain by going hiking with his grandpa on Sunday morning. And he’s going to the school football match in the evening. Can you plan your life and study well? You can join him to have fun.
Unit 6
Friends
Everyone needs friends. But what is a good friend like? Some people may say friends should have some things in common. Others may believe differences are important in a friendship. For me, I like to have friends who are different from me. I think friends should have opposite views and interests. It’s not necessary to be the same.
Larry is one of my best friends at primary school. We look alike. So people
always say she is my twin sister. In fact, we are quite different in many ways. Larry is a little calmer than me. I’m wilder. And she is also quieter and more serious than me. I’m more outgoing and funnier. I often make her laugh. As for sports, I’m more athletic than her. I always beat her in tennis, though she is smarter than me. We are both good at schoolwork. However, my favorite subjects are physics and chemistry. Hers are English and Chinese. I mean that we can help each other with study.
As you can see, Larry is not the same as me. But I don’t care about that. She is always my good friend, now and forever.
Unit 7
Tina's Birthday Party
Tina's birthday party was coming. She wanted to have a big party at home. Her friend Tara and she were good at cooking. So they decided to make a big dinner in Tina's house.
On the morning of Tina's birthday, her friends came to her house very early. They boiled noodles for Tina and add the ingredients to it. Tina felt surprised.Tina was interested in making traditional Chinese food. So she wanted to make the Beijing duck.First, she cut the duck into slices, then put the slices into a pancake with sauce and green onion, finally, roll the pancake.
Tara was good at making banana milk shake. Making the banana milk shake may be a little different.First, she peeled three bananas and cut them into pieces, secondly, put the bananas and ice cream into the blender, pour the milk into the blender, too.Turn on the blender, after one minute, turn it off, pour the shake into cups.As for Holly, she wanted to make chickensandwiches.First, she put the butter on a slice of bread. Then cut up an onion and a tomato.Add these to the bread,Next, put two teaspoons of relish in the chicken. Finally, put another slice of bread on the top, A super chicken sandwich was done! but she didn’t like lettuce in it.
They also made lots of popcorn with the popper , mixed watermelon juice and yogurt up to drink, The birthday party was wonderful! Every one enjoyed themselves very much!
Unit 8
Won it by yourself
Hey, guys, I’m Jack, just came back from Chicago, California. Here is how we have our day off. Our nice monitor, Toby, asked all the classmates to get money by ourselves to go to the aquarium. This was my first time out with my mates, so I would not ruin it. It was easy to sell those old umbrellas and raincoats in my yard sale in such a rainy, wet season. So, money was not a big problem.
With the money, we hung out to the Blue Water Aquarium. First we visited the
Visitors’ Center and watched a movie about sharks. Then we watched the exciting dolphins and seals shows, they really had a great competition. And I got a cool autograph and some souvenirs from that cool and nice trainer. After that, we went to the Outdoor Pool and saw an amazing octopus. Luckily, it was not my pet. But, I took many pictures of the monster. After lunch, we went to the Gift Shop and bought lots of gifts for my lovely sister.
Best time is always short. Tired but happy, we took the bus back home.
Unit 9
Famous People I Admired
There are many famous people, such as gymnasts, golfers, violinists, pianists, movie actors and so on. All of them performed well and won a prize. People admired them not only because they were talented, creative or outstanding, but their great achievements to the whole world.
However, some are famous for holding an unusual record. It’s heard that somebody can hiccup or sneeze for many years. It’s really hard to believe it.
Though most of these people were great, I admire my grandmother most. She was born in 1940 in Russia, but she was a Brazilian. In my opinion, she could be good at everything because of her hardworking. She could hum songs and difficult pieces of music at an early age. When she was five, she began to write
music and learn the accordion. My grandma was also an athlete. In 1956, she took part in the ice skating competition in Asia, and got the gold medal. After the championship, she toured the U.S. and Poland. Later she majored in management in University and joined the national table tennis team. From 1958 to 1960, she was the NO.1 women’s singles player in the ITTF.
Whatever she did, she did it perfectly. Even she was well-known as a champion, she worked very hard all the time. She was kind to others. To her grandson, she always said, “You are never too young to start doing things.” But to my grandpa, she would say, “Honey, you are never too old to learn things.” Although she is dead, she is always alive in my heart.
Unit 10
Dream Jobs
The day before yesterday, I made a survey among my students about their future resolutions. Their results sound very interesting. Most of the students are going to eat healthier food and exercise more to keep fit. Over half of them want to communicate better with their parents. Some of them are going to learn a foreign language. A few want to find a job as a language teacher.
Fred is going to be a professional programmer when he grows up. He is going to study computer science. Simon wants to be an engineer. He wants to build lots of subways and beautiful buildings. So he studies math really hard. But after
retiring, maybe he wants to learn to play an instrument. Sky is going to do what he wants to do. He likes traveling all over the world. He wants to move somewhere interesting and beautiful. He tells me that he is going to be a pilot. He will work harder to be rich. Edison would like to be an artist. He wants to go to Paris. There are lots of art exhibitions held there. He wants to save some money to take acting lessons and study French at the same time. So he has to take a part-time job. Of course, he must finish high school and college first. Manuel is an exchange student. I got a fax from him yesterday. He is not sure what to do yet, maybe a reporter or a reader. He likes to write articles and send them to international magazines and newspapers.
What about you? What are you going to be when you grow up? And how are you going to do that?
Unit 11
A Busy Girl
Rosa is a 13-year-old teenager in NO. 3 Middle School. She is a lazy girl and she hates doing the chores. But now she is working on chores, like folding clothes, making her bed, doing the laundry, sweeping the living room and taking out the trash. Why is she doing the chores now? It’s because of her pet.
Last night, Rosa borrowed a CD player and invited some friends to have a party at home. They enjoyed themselves and forgot to take care of her pet----a
monkey. The monkey went into the kitchen and looked for snacks to feed itself. Later, it saw some dirty dishes and it started to do the dishes. After cleaning one, it threw the dish on the floor. It’s easy to think of the result. So Rosa has to solve the problem by herself.
Unit 12
I love my city
I live in Chengdu, in Sichuan Province---- a lovely city. No matter where you were born, in a northern city or a southern city, you may fall in love with it .
In this city, we have the best movie theater named Zijin with the most comfortable seats, the biggest screens and the friendliest service. But it’s the farthest away from the center. There is a worst cinema close to Zijin, but it’s the cheapest. So people like to see movies there together with their families.
There’s also a funky clothing store for teenagers. You can find trendy jeans, good quality T-shirts and even the cheapest bargains there. If you are a music fan, you’d better listen to our best radio station. 97.7 FM is the most popular one. Yin Xin is the best place to have meals because you can enjoy performing without feeling dull. There are always many talent show by funny actors. What’s more, there are many comfortable coffee bars in our city, near to far. Some people like to sit in these bars to chat with friends about their life,
showing their positive or negative views.
Chengdu is such an unforgettable city!
